Student: Dax Houston

Position: DL

School: LOS ALAMITOS

Year: SR.

Although small for a defensive lineman, Houston (5-9, 173) still caused havoc in opponents’ backfields. Houston’s performance typified the Griffins’ undersized defense, which had a penchant for making big plays. Los Alamitos allowed only 14 points per game.

Student: Bill Johns

Position: DL

School: NEWPORT HARBOR

Year: SR.

Although Johns (5-9, 195) is small for a lineman, he used his exceptional quickness and strength to get in on 105 tackles, including 14 sacks; he had one fumble recovery. He provided relentless pursuit, and was named the Sea View League’s defensive player of the year.

Student: Tony Tuioti

Position: DL

School: FOOTHILL

Year: SR.

The 6-0, 265-pound defensive captain for the Knights was among his team’s leaders in lead tackles (46), assisted tackles (37), quarterback sacks (8.5) and forced fumbles (three). Is attracting attention from Brigham Young, Colorado State and Utah.

Student: Zane Champion

Position: LB

School: TRABUCO HILLS

Year: SR.

Has that linebacker mentality. Has the size (6-3, 240) and talent to be a Division I inside linebacker. At least Kansas and Colorado State think so. Those are two of the teams chasing him. Also a solid offensive lineman. A big reason the Mustangs made the Division I semifinals.

Student: Tony D’Amato

Position: LB

School: VILLA PARK

Year: SR.

A fierce hitter. Named the Century League’s defensive player of the year. A two-time all-league selection. Had two interceptions. Also a good blocker and runner as a fullback. Led team with 654 yards rushing and eight TDs. Planning trips to Nevada and CP San Luis Obispo.

Student: Dan McDonough

Position: LB

School: NEWPORT HARBOR

Year: SR.

McDonough (6-1, 215) continued Newport Harbor’s tradition of developing linebackers. He was in on 134 tackles (including 11 for losses), two sacks, an interception and one fumble recovery. He is aggressive, and one of his greatest assets is an ability to make great reads.

Student: Chris Young

Position: LB

School: RANCHO ALAMITOS

Year: SR.

Helped Vaqueros win Garden Grove League championship with 63 tackles (50 unassisted), one interception, one fumble recovery, one sack, two blocked punts (one for a touchdown) and one blocked field goal for a touchdown. Being recruited by Fresno State and Oregon.

Student: Anton Hector

Position: DB

School: ESPERANZA

Year: SR.

Hector (6-1, 172) was one of the best pass defenders in the county. His coverage was tight and receivers rarely beat him. He was also a fierce hitter. Hector finished with six interceptions and held Los Alamitos’ Tony Hartley to one reception in a 35-32 loss.

School: CANYON

Year: SR.

Tied for third in Orange County with seven interceptions. Always seemed to be around the ball. Also a standout receiver. Finished third in the county with 65 receptions for 896 yards and seven touchdowns. Helped Comanches reach Southern Section Division V playoffs.

Student: Bryan Lachappelle

Position: DB

School: EDISON

Year: SR.

Lachappelle (6-1, 190) is one of the biggest hitters to play in Orange County, and he showed it. A free safety, he had four interceptions, caused four fumbles, recovered two fumbles, blocked seven kicks and was in on 102 tackles. Pacific 10 and WAC teams are recruiting him.

Student: Ape Tuato

Position: DB

School: LOS AMIGOS

Year: SR.

A pretty fair quarterback--1,604 yards and 11 touchdowns passing, 376 yards rushing. But he’s even more celebrated as a defender with 31 solo tackles, 20 assists, two sacks and five passes broken up. He is being recruited by San Diego State and Colorado State.

Student: Peter Crosser

Position: P

School: SERVITE

Year: JR.

Averaged 44 net yards per kick for the Golden West League champions. But his real skill came with the loft and spin he put on the ball; opponents fumbled at least one punt in 13 of Servite’s 14 games, and the Friars recovered five of them. Also played some defensive end.
