Chairs were tossed, a locker room was trashed and 47 fouls were called--all in a girls’ high school basketball game in Vero Beach, Fla., that was called with more than a minute left in overtime.

St. Edward’s was leading Lincoln Park Academy, 35-31, with 1:18 to play Monday when the referee stopped the game after Lincoln Park Coach Maina Mack refused to leave the gym after consecutive technical fouls, bringing the number to six for the team.

Players from Lincoln Park then tossed their chairs and damaged the visitors’ locker room, ripping shower curtains and tearing up benches.

“It wasn’t a very nice game,” observed Coach Mike Redstone of St. Edward’s.

Trivia time: Who was the first NHL player to score 50 goals in a season?

All aboard: The University of Pittsburgh’s basketball team has a senior from the Bronx named Orlando Antigua, prompting Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe to write:

“We’re not sure if he’s one-way or round-trip.”

Timber trashing: Dan Barreiro of the Star Tribune of Minneapolis on the still-struggling Minnesota Timberwolves, who are winless in 10 home games this season:

“A reporter likes to refer to these Wolves as the Trembling Timber-Chihuahuas. A year ago, he received an angry letter from a Chihuahua owner. ‘I resent you likening my dog to that group of mongrels,’ he wrote.

“The man has a point. No self-respecting Chihuahua should have to carry that burden around his scrawny neck.”

Showtime: What does a baseball manager do while waiting out the strike? It’s dancing, no less, for Tony La Russa of the Oakland Athletics.

La Russa will perform today in the Oakland Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker, along with Athletic trainer Barry Weinberg and coach Dave McKay.

“I think the hardest thing is getting up in front of people out of your element,” La Russa said. “It’s hard to go up there and risk falling down or doing something embarrassing.”

Looking back: On this day in 1973, O.J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills rushed for 200 yards in a 34-14 victory over the New York Jets and set an NFL season rushing record of 2,003 yards.

Trivia answer: Maurice (Rocket) Richard of the Montreal Canadiens in 1944-45, making him the only NHL player to score 50 goals in a 50-game season.

Quotebook: Kurt Browning, NBC’s figure skating analyst, on a shirtless skater: “I’d give him a costume deduction.”
