PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Hoskins Might Fill In as a Safety Valve

Share

Starting free safety Eddie Anderson is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against Seattle because of a groin injury he suffered in the Raiders’ victory over Denver last Sunday. If Anderson is unable to play, Derrick Hoskins will start in his place, with Patrick Bates starting at strong safety.

“It will really feel good to be back out there,” said Hoskins, who began the season at starting strong safety only to lose his position after he was injured against Kansas City on Nov. 6. “It will be my first start since I got hurt.”

With Bates and Hoskins in the lineup, the Raiders will have interchangeable safeties.

“Both Patrick and I know each position like the back of our hands,” Hoskins said. “At times, you may see us switch, with me playing strong and him playing free.”

Anderson, a nine-year veteran, leads the team with 81 tackles, including two sacks.

Cornerback Lionel Washington, who has sat out the last four games because of a lower leg injury, will be inactive. He is expected to return for the final regular-season game against Kansas City.

With Dan McGwire starting at quarterback in place of injured Rick Mirer for the Seahawks, the Raiders will have an advantage because of McGwire’s lack of mobility.

“But you can’t count him out because he can throw the ball all over the field,” Coach Art Shell said. “He did good enough to lead them to a win last week (a 16-14 victory over Houston).”
