De La Hoya Set to Defend Title Against Molina

Oscar De La Hoya, undefeated World Boxing Organization lightweight champion, will defend his title against International Boxing Federation junior-lightweight champion John-John Molina on Feb. 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The co-feature is a light-heavyweight bout between former super-middleweight champion James Toney and undefeated Montell Griffin.

Peter Broudy of Celebrity Boxing said he will stage monthly boxing shows at The Pond of Anaheim. Broudy, who promotes shows at the Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills, said his first Orange County card will be Feb. 4.

Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier was taken off an anti-coagulant drug and cleared to scrimmage with the Cornhuskers in Miami on Dec. 24. After the scrimmage, Frazier will begin taking a different anti-coagulant until about 24 hours before the Jan. 1 Orange Bowl. He will resume taking the medication after the game.

Steve McNair, Alcorn State’s record-setting quarterback, and Youngstown State Coach Jim Tressel are the winners of the Walter Payton and Eddie Robinson Awards as the top player and coach in NCAA Division I-AA.

Baseball

Four days before the owners’ deadline to impose a salary cap, players gave management a revenue-sharing proposal in Washington, D.C., formalizing the ideas they had brought up last Wednesday before talks broke off. There were no major moves and only one member of management’s negotiating team, co-general partner Dave Montgomery of the Philadelphia Phillies, attended the session.

The Dodgers acquired left-hander John O’Donoghue from the Baltimore Orioles for right-hander John DeSilva. . . . Florida Marlin pitcher Ryan Bowen underwent knee surgery and probably will sit out the 1995 season.

College Basketball

The top two spots in the Associated Press men’s poll held steady for the third consecutive week, with No. 1 North Carolina (6-0) and UCLA (4-0), but the last three teams in the top 25 were newcomers--Illinois (7-1), California (5-0) and Iowa State (7-1). . . . Tennessee remained a unanimous choice for the top spot in the AP women’s poll. USC is 21st.

Jurisprudence

Football Coach Reggie Oliver of Alabama A&M; was legally drunk when his van struck a pedestrian, who also was hit by three other vehicles and died, police in Huntsville, Ala. said.

Oliver’s blood-alcohol content was measured at .135% after the Saturday morning incident, which killed William D. Waggoner.

Police said Oliver had not been charged with drunken driving because more serious charges are being considered.
