John R. Wooden Classic to Retain Name for 1995 Event at The Pond
The second John R. Wooden Classic will be at The Pond of Anaheim in 1995 with the former UCLA basketball coach’s name continuing as part of the event, a tournament organizer said Monday.
Though the Dec. 3 event was a success with a crowd of 18,307, there have been reports that Wooden was uncomfortable with the halftime tribute and how proceeds from the event were disbursed--he reportedly wanted more given to charities.
But the two sides apparently ironed out their differences.
“Though there were some minor misunderstandings recently, they’re going to move ahead with the coach’s name attached to the event,” said Todd Lieman, spokesman for Irvine-based Hill and Knowlton, which managed the event.
