COLLEGE BASKETBALL : LACC Rolls to an Easy Win, 107-59

Los Angeles City College had an easy time running its fast break against San Diego City College and rolled to a 107-59 win in the semifinals of the Los Angeles City Classic on Thursday.

Derrick Higgins scored 23 points and Derrick Brown added 16 for the Cubs.

“We ran our lanes well,” Los Angeles City College Coach Mike Miller said. “It was the sort of game where no one really stood out, but at the same time everyone gave an effort.”

Record: Los Angeles City 16-1

Los Angeles City College 86, Harbor College 46--Using a tenacious pressure defense, the Cubs cruised to victory in the first round of the Los Angeles Classic on Wednesday.

LACC led only 7-6 early in the first half, but turned up the pressure to build leads of 34-18 at the half and 71-28 midway through the second half.

LACC forward Derrick Brown led all scorers with 22 points, while teammates Jason Wright and Markee Brown added 12 and 11 respectively. Forwards Saipele Tuialii, Terrance Askew and Sako Balian combined for 21 of the Cubs’ 45 rebounds.

San Diego City College 87, Trade Tech 86--Trade Tech’s Dwight Curry hit a three-point shot at the buzzer, but the Beavers fell short in the first round of the Los Angeles Classic Basketball Tournament at Los Angeles City College on Wednesday.

Trade Tech, which trailed for most of the contest, got its first lead, 78-77, on a Curry free throw with 2:33 left in the game. However, a pair of turnovers helped San Diego City College outscore the Beavers 10-8 down the stretch.

Trade Tech was led by Curry (28 points), Ernest Moore (25) and Lawrence Dierbeck (22).
