PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Williams Won’t Recall Big Numbers

Share

Tailback Harvey Williams rushed for 983 yards this season despite not being named the starting tailback until the Raiders’ seventh game.

Had he been able to gain 17 more yards Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs, he would have been the first Raider to gain 1,000 since Marcus Allen carried for 1,759 yards in 1985.

Williams also scored seven touchdowns, nearly double his previous total of four, gained in three seasons.

But when asked what he would remember most about the season, Williams said, “The mistakes.”

Receiver Tim Brown was coming off a career season for the Raiders in 1993 with 80 catches for 1,180 yards. He surpassed those totals this season with 89 catches for 1,309 yards.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that all the other wide receivers on the Raiders had a total of only 70 catches.

Quarterback Jeff Hostetler threw for 3,334 yards this season, the second-highest in club history, behind only the 3,615 yards amassed by Ken Stabler in 1979. Hostetler threw for 3,242 yards last season, his first with the Raiders. The highest total by Daryle Lamonica, the Raiders’ so-called Mad Bomber of the Oakland days, was 3,302 yards in 1969.

The Raiders set a league record with 156 penalties, breaking the mark of 149 set by the Houston Oilers in 1989, but they fell short of the record for penalty yardage. The Raiders were penalized 1,186 yards this season. The record is 1,274, set by the Oakland Raiders in 1969.
