Simi Valley High baseball Coach Mike Scyphers is considering an offer to become baseball coach at Sandpoint High in Sandpoint, Ida., but said he will coach the Pioneers this spring regardless.

Jack Dyck, the athletic director at Sandpoint, played basketball with Scyphers at Cal State Northridge and later became basketball coach at Beverly Hills High.

“I think he has pretty much said the baseball job is mine if I want it,” Scyphers said.

Scyphers, 42, said he is planning to visit Sandpoint, about 50 miles from the Canadian border, in early January to look over the school. He said the job would begin in the 1995-96 school year, so he may not make a decision until the summer.

Scyphers led the Pioneers into national prominence during his 16 years as coach at Simi Valley. His teams, which reached the top of the USA Today national rankings in 1986 and 1993, have produced dozens of professional and college players, including Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Scott Radinsky.

Last spring, though, Scyphers was suspended pending police and school district investigations into alleged financial and disciplinary improprieties. He missed the final seven games of the season, but after a 10-week battle with authorities, Scyphers was cleared and reinstated as coach.
