In the Reebok/Above the Rim tournament:

Mater Dei 93, Merced 48--Mater Dei’s competition is getting easier and the Monarchs’ play keeps getting better. The result was a blowout in the quarterfinals at Torrey Pines High in Del Mar.

After receiving a scare in the first round against San Diego Scripps Ranch, the top-ranked Monarchs (14-1) have had two consecutive laughers. Wednesday’s game, played before a crowd of about 2,000 that included Jerry Tarkanian, was close for about five minutes.

Mater Dei led Merced (8-5) by three points before going on a 29-7 run the final 11 minutes of the half. Senior guard Clay McKnight was the spark as he hit five three-pointers in the half, and finished with six three-pointers on 11 attempts and 20 points after scoring only six Tuesday.

Sophomore forward Schea Cotton had his second consecutive spectacular game, scoring 28 points on a wide array of rim-rattling dunks and pretty inside moves. About the only area Cotton didn’t dominate was on the perimeter, where he was one of five from three-point range. He made 10 of 16 shots overall and grabbed six rebounds.

Center Shaun Jackson added 20 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Point guard Kevin Augustine was the only Monarch who didn’t play well, scoring just three points and committing eight turnovers in 20 minutes of play.

Mater Dei will play Queens (N.Y.) Christ the King (6-1) in tonight’s semifinals at 7:30. Christ the King is led by 6-6 junior forward Ira Miller, who scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Wednesday’s 73-69 quarterfinal victory over Riverside North.
