Nine regional athletes have been named to the All-Southern Section football team, and two area schools each had two representatives.

Antelope Valley High defensive linemen Caleb Smith and Chad Shrout garnered section honors, and kicker Chris Sailer and linebacker David Dupetit of Notre Dame also earned the distinction.

All are seniors.

For Dupetit, the Mission League’s most valuable player, the awards keep coming despite his 5-foot-10, 185-pound frame, much to his surprise.

“In a way it does (surprise me) because for my position, most guys are a lot bigger,” Dupetit said. “I’m pretty small for my position. But I guess size doesn’t matter.”

The section’s best offensive players include junior running back Ted Iacenda of Hart High, senior receiver Billy Miller of Westlake, and senior linemen Mark Manskar of Canyon and Kane Cullum of Crespi.

Senior punter Ignacio Brache of Village Christian was the only player recognized from Division X. Brache averaged 41 yards a punt and kicked 16 field goals, including 10 from 40 yards or more and five of 50-plus.

In three seasons, he had 32 field goals and converted 74 of 78 extra-point attempts.
