GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Garrett Keys Capistrano Valley’s Victory

Jennifer Garrett scored 16 points in the second half to lead Capistrano Valley to a 47-42 victory over Trabuco Hills in the South Coast League opener for both teams Thursday at Capistrano Valley.

Garrett finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Liz Fleming added 10 points and Sarina Kissel seven points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars (9-4).

Point guard Nicole Franklin left the game in the first half because of an ankle injury, the second Capistrano Valley point guard to be injured this season.

Dyanna Hatch scored 12 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter for Trabuco Hills (12-4).

In other South Coast League games:

Mater Dei 68, Dana Hills 36--Melody Peterson scored 30 points for No. 3 Mater Dei (10-0, 1-0), which led, 37-16, at halftime. Jamie Fowler scored 14 points for host Dana Hills (4-13, 0-1).

San Clemente 64, Mission Viejo 41--Emily Ela set a school record with six three-pointers and scored 22 points for visiting San Clemente (6-7, 1-0). The Tritons scored 40 points in the first half.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 39, El Modena 36--Velina Gibson scored a game-high 16 points and had five assists for Santa Ana Valley (10-4, 1-0). Teammate Tanya Whitlock added 12 points. Heather Potter scored 15 for El Modena (4-9, 0-1).

Foothill 52, Orange 28--Stacey Brunansky had 13 points and Erica Hoernig had 10 for Foothill (5-10, 0-1), which led, 25-12, in the first half. Cecilia Medina had eight points for Orange (4-9, 0-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 76, Sunny Hills 49--Aiyanna Nash scored 40 points for host Sonora (3-11, 1-0), which won its first league game since February, 1993. Kristi DeOliva added 11 points and 21 rebounds for the Raiders. Randi Kameoka scored 25 points for Sunny Hills (0-15, 0-1).

Troy 54, Fullerton 45--Troy trailed, 33-24, at halftime, but rallied to win by nine. Dinah Shah had 16 points and Jennie Gadd had 13 points and four blocked shots for the Warriors. Nadia Hoerner had 24 points for visiting Fullerton (6-8, 0-1).

La Habra 61, Buena Park 20--Aimee Weathers had 15 points and Amy Lien had 13 points for La Habra (8-6, 1-0). Sandra Cavez had eight points for Buena Park (0-11, 0-1).

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 54, Ontario Christian 43--Whitney Hoover had 19 points and six steals, Christie Ring had 16 points and eight steals and Erin Maylow had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Calvary Chapel (4-8, 1-0). Kari Systma had 22 points for Ontario Christian (7-3, 0-1).

Orange Lutheran 59, Brethren Christian 44--Lori Wright scored 16 points and had nine rebounds for host Orange Lutheran (9-4, 1-0).

Cerritos Valley Christian 61, Whittier Christian 53--The Heralds (11-4, 0-1) were led by Alana Kempton with 18 points, including four three-pointers, and seven rebounds. Kim Menke added 14 points. Valley Christian, the defending league champion, is 10-2, 1-0.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 88, Anaheim 11--Dawn Metz had 18 points and Kiyoko Miller added 14 for second-ranked Brea Olinda (12-1, 1-0). Stephanie Durrett had six points for Anaheim (3-8, 0-1).

Magnolia 48, Savanna 18--Andrea Picchi scored 20 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for Magnolia (11-3, 1-0). Teammate Mary Tuazon added 10 points and six assists.

Western 65, Valencia 55--Jennifer Christensen scored 19 points and Adrian Ratajczak had 14 points and 11 rebounds for host Western (7-5, 1-0).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 73, Los Alamitos 39--Sonya Bryant had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Kirsten Cappel had 14 points and 13 rebounds for fourth-ranked Marina (12-2, 1-0). Katie Ensley had nine points for visiting Los Alamitos (6-9, 0-1).

Fountain Valley 59, Huntington Beach 51--Jennifer Ludwicki scored 12 points, Nicole Strange had 11 and Heather Basco 10 for No. 5 Fountain Valley (12-5, 1-0), which nearly blew a 25-point lead.

Edison 53, Esperanza 45--Marie Philman had 21 points to lead Edison (12-2, 1-0), in a game between two of the county’s top teams. The eighth-ranked Chargers outscored Esperanza, 21-7, from the free-throw line and, 29-19, in the second half. Monique Toney had 14 points for No. 9 Esperanza (12-4, 0-1), which upset No. 1 Woodbridge Tuesday.
