Point guard Mario Thompson’s 60-foot shot at the third-quarter buzzer proved to be the difference as Alemany High rallied to upset Loyola, 73-70, in a Mission League game Friday at the Sports Arena.

Alemany led, 27-15, after one quarter, but trailed by as many as five points in the second half.

Thompson’s three-pointer pulled the Indians (9-11, 3-4 in league play) to within one, 62-61.

Thompson scored 13 points, Adrian Pantoja 23 and Jesus Castillon 21.

The defending league champion Cubs (10-6, 2-4) had an opportunity to win in the final seconds. However, Todd Edwards missed two free throws with six seconds left and Alemany clinging to a 71-70 lead.
