BOYS’ BASKETBALL : ROUNDUP : Big Quarter Gets Griffins Past Edison
Los Alamitos took over second place and stayed within a game of Fountain Valley by defeating Edison, 65-54, in a Sunset League boys’ basketball game Friday at Los Alamitos.
The Griffins (18-6, 6-2) outscored Edison, 21-10, in the third quarter to break open the game, which was tied at halftime.
Los Alamitos’ Ali Ton scored 21 points and had eight assists.

In other Sunset League games:
Fountain Valley 73, Marina 28--Ninth-ranked Fountain Valley (16-6, 7-1) led, 35-8, at halftime. Phil Domingo had 15 points to lead first-place Fountain Valley.
Huntington Beach 52, Esperanza 43--Clay Chilcott scored 14 points to lead host Huntington Beach (11-11, 4-4). Lonnie Tape had 15 points for Esperanza (14-10, 5-3).
In the Academy League:
St. Margaret’s 89, Liberty Christian 73--Damian Raibon had 26 points and Rob Miltner had 23 points for St. Margaret’s (16-3, 7-0). Brian Avery had 30 points and Bob McClung had 25 points for Liberty Christian (9-11, 3-4).
In the Century League:
Santa Ana Valley 71, Orange 52--Olujimi Mann had 22 points and Mikey Riggins had 16 points for fifth-ranked Santa Ana Valley (16-7, 7-1). Santa Ana Valley clinched at least a tie for the Century League title.
Canyon 48, El Modena 34 (game called because of fight)--Jeff Llewellyn had 12 points to lead Canyon (10-14, 4-4). The game was called with 1:30 left to play as a result of a bench-clearing fight.
Villa Park 58, Foothill 53--Mike Vogeding scored 13 and Jason Hutson added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Villa Park (12-9, 3-5). Eric Chenowith added 11 rebounds and eight points for the Spartans. For Foothill (12-11, 3-5), Dan Almquist scored 22 and Sean Higgins hit five three-pointers in his 17-point effort.
In the Empire League:
Cypress 59, Loara 42--Brett Boulton had 23 points and 13 rebounds and Derek Mitchell had 13 points and eight assists for eighth-ranked Cypress (19-4, 7-1).
Katella 50, Century 45--Katella outscored Century, 19-16, in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Mike Pahl had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the 10th-ranked Knights (19-3, 6-2).
El Dorado 64, Kennedy 44--Robbie Sammons scored 18 points for host El Dorado (17-7, 5-3).
In the Express League:
Claremont 71, Bethel Christian 32--Ryan Cronkite had 25 points and Steve Kimble had 13 for visiting Claremont (12-6, 6-6). Stephen Davidson had 22 points for Bethel Christian.
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 65, La Habra 47--Sam Mankiewicz and Ryan Schatz had eight rebounds each and Seth La Tour had 17 points to lead Fullerton (16-7, 7-1).
In the Golden West League:
Ocean View 54, Santa Ana 36--Dan McDonald scored 16 points and Mike Seguin added 12 for Ocean View (16-9, 6-2). Danny Rivero scored 10 for Santa Ana (6-16, 1-7).
Servite 50, Saddleback 35--David Downs scored 16 points and Peter Matinelli scored 11 for Servite (16-7, 6-2).
In the Olympic League:
Whittier Christian 76, Orange Lutheran 64--Brad Smith made a school-record seven three-pointers for Whittier Christian (11-11, 5-3). Smith finished with 24 points.
In the Orange League:
Brea Olinda 70, Magnolia 62--Eric Repp scored 24 and John Norum 21 for Brea Olinda (17-7, 7-1). Josh Reding had a season-high 32 points for Magnolia (10-13, 2-6).
Valencia 65, Savanna 46--Salim Aqil scored 20 points to lead host Valencia (9-15, 6-2). David Draghinas had 15 points for Savanna (4-4 in league).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Estancia 54, Costa Mesa 23--The fifth-ranked Eagles (21-3, 8-0) stayed unbeaten in league play as they held Costa Mesa to six first-half points.
University 70, Laguna Hills 47--Ryan Schachter had 23 points, including five three-pointers and freshman Eric Palmer had eight points and eight assists for host University (6-17, 2-6), which outscored Laguna Hills, 21-5, in the third quarter. Mike Morten had 14 points and Johnny Phan added 13 for Laguna Hills (14-8, 2-6).
In the Sea View League:
Corona del Mar 53, Newport Harbor 36--Brian Fracalosy scored 17 points for Corona del Mar (13-10, 5-3), which led, 26-16, at the half.
Santa Margarita 67, El Toro 46--Allen Krist had 17 points and seven rebounds for fourth-ranked Santa Margarita (22-1, 8-0) which clinched the Sea View League title with the victory. The victory also extended their home winning streak to 24 games. Travis Senik had 13 points for El Toro (8-14, 1-7).
Woodbridge 70, Irvine 65--Chris Burgess scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds for Woodbridge (15-9, 4-4). Darrell Parker had 16 points for Irvine (10-14, 4-4).
