BOYS’ BASKETBALL : Manual Arts Wins on Shot at Buzzer

Darnell Scretchings hit a 10-foot jump shot with one second left to give the Toilers a thrilling 96-94 victory over Hamilton in the Coastal Conference season finale at Hamilton on Friday.

Travis Reed took a pass from Darwin Carter on the baseline, but missed a layup with four seconds remaining. But Scretching grabbed the rebound and put up a desperation shot to beat the buzzer.

Reed finished with a game-high 31 points and 10 rebounds.

Carter added 23 points and four steals and Scretching had five points.

Records: Manual Arts 12-10; Hamilton 16-7.

Pilgrim 114, Pacific Christian 29--Pilgrim point guard Fred Burnam’s 27 assists Tuesday in a Heritage League game shattered the two-year old Southern Section mark of 26 set by Rick Martinez of Ambassador Baptist. Burnam also scored seven points.

Jeret Black led all scorers with 31 points and Brandon Campbell added 24 points. Billy Lewis scored a career-high 28 points.

Conrad Laing led Pacific Christian with 11 points.

Records: Pilgrim 17-4.

Cathedral 95 Salesian 61--Cathedral seniors Jerry Villarreal, Richard Miguel and Javier Rivera each scored 16 points as the Phantoms won a Santa Fe League game on Wednesday.

The Phantoms outrebounded Salesian, 45-23.

Rivera, a 6-foot-7 center, had 15 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Trailing 51-33 at halftime, the Mustangs had a 12-3 run to pull within nine points, 54-45, with 4:32 left in the third quarter. Junior guard Gabriel Medina scored six of his 10 points during the scoring spurt.

The Mustangs, however, made only six field goals the rest of the game.

Salesian’s sophomore center Erik Gomes led all scorers with 18 points.

Records: Salesian 6-13; Cathedral 7-12.

Crenshaw 64, Washington 61--Raymond Palmer scored 23 points, including an uncharacteristic three three-point shots, as the Cougars clinched the best record in the Southern Pacific Conference on Wednesday at Washington High.

The victory avenged Crenshaw’s loss to the Generals in the finals of the Pacific Open at Washington. It also gave the Cougars a two-game sweep against Washington in Southern Pacific Conference games.

With the score tied 47-47, the Cougars took the lead for good on Ronnie Arch’s three-point shot and outscored Washington, 13-6, to begin the fourth quarter.

The Generals trimmed the lead to three points on a basket by Charles Stone with 12 seconds left. After Corey Williams missed a free throw at the other end, Washington had a chance to tie it, but Ty Lamar missed a three-point shot with five seconds left.

The Generals made 17 of 39 free throws.

Records: Crenshaw 19-4; Washington 18-6.

Verbum Dei 74, St. Monica 67--Verbum Dei used its full-court press to score five transition baskets in a pivotal second quarter en route to a Camino Real League win Wednesday night at Compton College. The Eagles improved to 9-0 in league behind Andre Smith’s 23 points.

Records: Verbum Dei 17-5.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 74, Loyola 65--Tom Zapata scored a game-high 25 points as Notre Dame won a Mission League game Wednesday at Loyola.

Ryan Bowne and Collin Plume scored 17 apiece for Notre Dame.

The Cubs were led by Dan Farmer, who scored 17 points, and Ryan Bailey, who added 15 points.

Records: Notre Dame 18-6; Loyola 13-9.

Eagle Rock 82, Belmont 57--Glen Harris scored 18 points and Cary Adams chipped in with 14 as Eagle Rock won a Northern Conference game Wednesday at Belmont.

Benny Hoang, Eagle Rock’s top shooter, scored seven points with 13 assists and four steals.

The Sentinels were led by Jerry Alejandre’s 18 points and John Burdios, who scored 13 points.

Records: Eagle Rock 18-5.

Lincoln 67, Verdugo Hills 66--Israel Lopez’ jumpshot with four seconds remaining in the game lifted Lincoln to a Northern Conference win Wednesday at Lincoln.

Lopez scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half.

Alan Gomez added 17 points for Lincoln.

The Eagles enjoyed an 18-point lead at halftime, 46-28, behind Maurice Potter’s 29 points and 15 rebounds.

Records: Lincoln 8-5; Verdugo Hills 8-15.

Huntington Park 63, South Gate 59--George Lara scored 12 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter as Huntington Park won its third consecutive game in a Southeastern Conference matchup Wednesday at Huntington Park.

Forward Jose Carona led the Rams with 22 points and guard Jaime Rios added 17.

Records: Huntington Park 9-12.

St. Genevieve 85, Cathedral 83--A three-pointer by Mark Padilla late in the fourth quarter put St. Genevieve ahead for good, 79-78, as the Valiants won a Santa Fe League game Monday at Cathedral.

Padilla scored all of his 10 points in the fourth quarter.

St. Genevieve’s Randy Iaccino scored a game-high 32 points.

Guard Travis Jackson led Cathedral with 17 points.

Records: St. Genevieve 8-12; Cathedral 6-12.

Westchester 85, Los Angeles 63--Chris Popoola led a balanced Westchester attack with 24 points as the Comets won a Coastal Conference game Wednesday at Los Angeles.

Ben Sanders, who will sign with UNLV, scored 16 points and junior guard Danny Walker added 14 points for Westchester.

Freshman Deon Green led Los Angeles with 17 points and forward Demetric Hymes scored 16.

Records: Westchester 22-6; Los Angeles 11-12.

Manual Arts 105, University 75--Darwin Carter and Travis Reed each scored 22 points as the Toilers manhandled the Yankees in a Coastal Conference game.

Records: Manual Arts 11-10.
