COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Freshman Tellez Homers Twice in Fullerton Rout

Andy Tellez hit two home runs and drove in five runs as host Fullerton beat Los Angeles City, 16-3, Saturday in the Casey Stengel Tournament.

Tellez’s first home run came with a man on in the third to put the Hornets ahead, 5-1. He added a three-run homer in the seventh to make it 12-3. Tellez, a freshman outfielder from Santa Fe Springs St. Paul High, has five home runs.

Poncho Ruiz, Matt Simpson, and Chad Smith each had two hits for the Hornets, who had 16; Smith’s hits were doubles.

Marc Anspach and Derian Slayton each hit a two-run home run for Fullerton.

In other Casey Stengle Tournament games:

Bakersfield 8, Fullerton 7--Bakersfield’s Eric Fuller hit a grand slam and drove in the winning run with an infield single in the top of the ninth as Fullerton (10-1) suffered its first loss. Ambro Salas hit a home run for the Hornets.

Bakersfield 6, Rancho Santiago 5; Rancho Santiago 14, College of the Canyons 3--Tony Zuniga had four hits, including three doubles, and Keith Cowley hit his third homer in the second game for Rancho Santiago (9-2).

In round-robin play at the Golden Coast baseball tournament:

Cypress 4, College of the Sequoias 1; Cypress 14, Monterey Peninsula 7--Israel Gonzalez had four hits, including a home run, and three RBIs on the day for Cypress (13-1), which won the round-robin. Brooks Morris and Keith Ginter also had four hits and three RBIs.

Orange Coast 8, L.A. Harbor 1; Orange Coast 10, Southwestern 3--Brian Salterelli went three for four in the first game, with an RBI and two runs scored, and five for seven on the day for Orange Coast (7-6). Miles Hughey went two for five with two doubles and two RBIs in the first game. L.A. Harbor is 9-4.

In the second game, Geoff Wilson was three for five with two runs scored and one RBI, and Chris Yakura and Brian Salterelli each had two hits for Orange Coast. Southwestern is 2-9.

L.A. Harbor 7, Golden West 4; Southwestern 14, Golden West 4--Ken Miles hit a home run in the first game, and Brad Smith homered in the second for Golden West (5-7). Garrett Vitale doubled and tripled in the second game.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Foothill 0--Greg Reitz had nine kills for host Golden West (2-0), which won, 15-4, 15-2, 15-2.
