SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION I WRESTLING : Calvary Chapel Wins 6 for Easy Team Victory

Two-time defending state champion Calvary Chapel totaled 264.5 points Saturday to claim its fourth consecutive section wrestling title in the Southern Section Division I championships at El Monte High.

Calvary Chapel won six of 13 weight championships in running away from Canyon Springs (151 points), Dos Pueblos (121), Anaheim (101) and Rio Mesa (92.5).

Leading the way for the Eagles was defending state champion and two-time section champion Josh Holiday. Holiday improved to 42-0 and his two-year record to 93-1 with a 10-5 victory over Rio Mesa’s Tom Nelford at 154 pounds.

In other Calvary Chapel championship matches, Tino Archuleta defeated Tim Sais of Hesperia, 16-11, at 105; Joe Calavitta beat Rio Mesa’s Jesse Bautista, 14-3, at 127; Ed Mosley routed Brawley’s Omar Duenas, 22-10, at 162; Mike Aguirre beat Juan Nunez of Coachella Valley, 12-6, at 173, and Matt Van Hook edged Magnolia’s Lamarr Toomes, 10-7, at 191.

Anaheim’s Alexei Yawauarae was the county’s other division champion, beating Rio Mesa’s Jesse Campos, 11-8, at 132. Yawauarae improved his season record to 51-2.

Calvary Chapel’s Burt Pierson (114) and Capistrano Valley’s Mark Stephenson (142) lost their respective finals but still advanced to next week’s Southern Section Masters meet, which took the top six finishers from Divisions I and II.

Another of the meet’s top wrestlers was Gabe Roman of Oxnard High, who remained undefeated at 37-0 by winning the 147 pound title, recording one pin on the way.

Capistrano Valley finished eighth in the team standings with 84 points, and Magnolia and Mission Viejo tied for 10th at 66.5.
