COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Wake Forest Wins at No. 2 North Carolina

Randolph Childress took care of the perimeter with 26 points and Tim Duncan patrolled the inside as No. 9 Wake Forest beat No. 2 North Carolina, 79-70, Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, N.C., for the first time in 13 years.

More importantly, the Demon Deacons put themselves in position for at least a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title for the first time in 33 years.

Wake Forest, 20-5 overall and 11-4 in the ACC, moved into a tie for second place in the league with the Tar Heels and Virginia. Maryland (11-3) is alone atop the ACC with two games remaining. There is the possibility of a four-way tie for first place at the end of the regular season.

Duncan outplayed North Carolina’s Rasheed Wallace, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

No. 7 Arkansas 94, Florida 85--Corliss Williamson scored 20 points to lead a balanced attack by the Razorbacks (24-5, 11-4) that included 10 three-point baskets in a Southeastern Conference victory over the Gators (14-11, 7-8) at Gainesville, Fla.

No. 8 Massachusetts 86, Rhode Island 71--Marcus Camby scored 21 points and Lou Roe grabbed his 1,000th career rebound as the Minutemen (22-4, 12-3) clinched their fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 title at Amherst, Mass.

Freshman Tyson Wheeler scored a career-high 33 points for Rhode Island (7-19, 2-14).

No. 11 Villanova 92, Boston College 68--Kerry Kittles scored a career-high 44 points to tie a 29-year-old Wildcat scoring mark in a Big East victory over Boston College (8-17, 2-15) at Villanova, Pa. Villanova is 22-6, 14-3.

No. 13 Virginia 63, Virginia Tech 62--Harold Deane (10 points) made up for his lowest offensive output in 12 games by making a shot in the lane with 17 seconds left in a victory at Richmond, Va. Virginia is 20-7.

OTHER GAMES

Voshon Lenard scored 22 points and Jayson Walton added 19 points and 14 rebounds as Minnesota (18-9, 9-6) held off Wisconsin (12-12, 6-9), 78-70, in a Big Ten game at Minneapolis to keep its NCAA tournament hopes alive. . . . Jamal Phillips scored 20 of his 28 points after picking up his fourth foul with 12:47 to play in leading Rutgers (12-13, 7-8) to a 91-87 victory over George Washington (19-12, 10-6) in Atlantic 10 action at Piscataway, N.J. . . . Senior Justin Wimmer, playing his final home game, scored 25 points to lead Memphis (21-7, 8-2) to an 87-60 victory over Dayton (7-17, 0-10) in a Great Midwest Conference game at Memphis, Tenn. The victory gives Memphis at least a share of the conference title. . . . Pat Garrity had 17 points to lead Notre Dame (15-12) to a 93-63 victory over Loyola of Illinois (5-21) at South Bend, Ind., in the Fighting Irish’s last regular-season game as an independent. . . .
