COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Farmer Helps Valley Put Long Beach City Out to Pasture

Valley College guard Mike Farmer sank three free throws in the final 35 seconds to seal an 81-76 upset over Long Beach City, defending state champion, Wednesday night in the second round of the junior college regional at Long Beach.

The Monarchs (21-12) took the lead for good on a five-footer by Vernon Simmons (eight points, 14 rebounds) with one minute to play. Valley made four of six free throws in the final minute.

Lamar Thompson scored 20 points for Valley, the No. 12 seeded team, and Farmer added 17. Both are former Sylmar High players.

Pete Sverkos scored 20 points and Chris Blanton 16 for fifth-seeded Long Beach (25-9), which led, 44-38, at halftime.

Valley will play Riverside in the third round Saturday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 73, CS Northridge 49--Leticia Oseguera scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds for Irvine (15-10) in a nonconference game at Irvine.

Lisa Vaillancourt and Carrie Dormire each scored 12 for Northridge (1-24).

Oseguera made eight of 12 shots and four of nine free throws.

Vaillancourt made four of nine shots and two of five from the free-throw line. Dormire sank five of nine shots.

Holly Babcock, who scored six points, led the Matadors with six rebounds. Maureen Batiste and Kelly Morris each had five rebounds and Tannea Nelson added four.

BASEBALL

Cal Baptist 9, The Master’s 2--Ramsey Altwaiji’s seventh-inning grand slam overcame a 2-0 Master’s lead in an NAIA game at Cal Baptist.

Matt Musselman had a double for Cal Baptist (8-3).

Master’s (8-5) managed only seven singles.

Ryan Dowhower (0-1) pitched six innings for Master’s before being relieved by Steve Rogers in the seventh and Paul Gomez in the eighth.

SOFTBALL

Antelope Valley 11, Valley 1--Shortstop Cindy Sims had three hits, including a two-run home run in the second inning, for the Marauders in a nonconference game at Lancaster.

Sandy Holm had two hits, including a fourth-inning home run, for Antelope Valley (10-3).

Canyons 9, Rio Hondo 1--Tricia Beer went three for four, had two runs batted in and two triples to boost the Cougars to a nonleague victory at Valencia.

Canyons had a season-high 14 hits.

Moorpark 1, Southwestern 0--Vicky Vasquez knocked in the only run with a double to lift the Raiders (1-5) to a nonleague victory over Southwestern (6-5) at Moorpark.

Teammate Jennifer Edwards went three for three with two doubles.
