May Trial Date Set for Former Northridge Football Player

A jury trial is scheduled to begin May 1 in San Bernardino Superior Court in the case of former Cal State Northridge football player Jonathan Beauregard, who has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Beauregard’s next court appearance will be April 7 at a pretrial hearing. He is out of jail on $100,000 bail.

Basketball

David Redmond and Scott LeWinter of Birmingham High have been selected North Valley League co-players of the year.

Redmond, a 6-5 sophomore and LeWinter, a 5-10 senior, led the Braves to the City 3-A title game.

Chatsworth High girls’ basketball player Nancy Vincent has been selected most valuable player of the North Valley League. The junior center averaged 13.5 points and 10.7 rebounds.

Maxine Unverferth of Paraclete High was selected the most valuable player of the High Desert League. Unverferth averaged 15.7 points and 10.2 rebounds.

Soccer

La Reina High fullback Katie Russell will sign a letter of intent with the University of San Francisco early next week, her father said. Russell was the Tri-Valley League’s most valuable defensive player.

Chaminade sweeper Vanessa Thiele has been selected Mission League player of the year.

Midfielders Tammy Alderman of Alemany and Tami Pivnick of Chaminade were named co-offensive players of the year. Harvard-Westlake midfielder Natalie Kim was selected defensive player of the year and Alemany’s Michelle Aasen was goalie of the year.

Marmonte League coaches have selected Simi Valley’s Monica Gerardo as offensive most valuable player and Westlake’s Danica Liberman as defensive most valuable player.

Simi Valley’s Mark Johnson and Westlake’s Tahn Hyun were voted co-coaches of the year.

Canyon High senior sweeper Kristi Giordano has been selected Foothill League player of the year.

Four players from the region are among 26 players chosen to play for the West boys’ and girls’ teams in the 1995 High School Seniors All Star games.

Each team will play two games against other regional all-star teams. The West boys’ and girls’ teams face the East on Sunday at Cal State Los Angeles. The West boys play the North and the West girls play the East on Thursday at Montclair High.

The West girls’ team includes Foothill League player of the year Kristi Giordano and Mission League co-offensive player of the year Tammy Alderman.

The West boys’ team includes Golden League player of the year Danny Nishiyama of Quartz Hill and Foothill League player of the year Jesus Diaz of Burroughs.

Softball

A nonconference doubleheader between Cal State Northridge and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was postponed Friday because of rain. A makeup date has not been announced.
