MIAMI — Peter Jacobsen, already a two-time winner this year, gave himself the birthday present of an eight-under-par 64 and moved into a tie with Greg Norman for the third-round lead Saturday in the Doral-Ryder Open.
Jacobsen, playing on his 41st birthday, birdied five holes in a row, did not make a bogey and did not have a five on his card for his jaunt over the defenseless Blue Monster course at Doral.
“I got a nice fax from the kids (back home in Portland, Ore.) that said ‘Go out and shoot a good score. Give yourself a good present,’ ” Jacobsen said. “So I did.”
Norman tied Jacobsen with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to shoot a third-round 65 and put himself in position to win his third Doral title since 1990.
“My priority is to go play well tomorrow,” said Norman, who hasn’t made a bogey in the tournament. “I just want to go play a smooth and consistent game of golf.
“If it happens (a bogey-free tournament), it happens. I’ve never done that in my career.”
The leaders have a three-shot advantage over Nick Faldo and second-round leader Davis Love III. Faldo shot a 66 in Saturday’s windy conditions on the 6,939-yard, par-72 layout. Love, who needs a victory to qualify for the Masters, shot a 70.
