HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Franklin Splits Its Squad, Sweeps Tournament Games
Playing with a split squad, Franklin High scored the winning run on a close play at the plate in the 10th inning to defeat host Granada Hills, 3-2, in a pool-play game of the San Fernando tournament Wednesday afternoon.
The other half of Franklin’s team defeated North Hollywood, 7-4, in a tournament make-up game at Franklin.
In other San Fernando tournament games:
Grant 2, El Camino Real 1--Walter Rios of Grant (1-2) gave up only one run, struck out three and hit a bases-loaded single to bring in the winning run.
Thousand Oaks 1, Cleveland 0--Lancer first baseman Eric Soliz scored in the second inning on a sacrifice fly.
Birmingham 8, Monroe 6--Fernando Centeno gave up one hit in five innings for the Braves (2-2).
Westminster 9, Crespi 5--Crespi starter Ray Munoz (1-2) pitched four innings in the seventh-place game of the El Segundo tournament.
Peninsula 2, Royal 1--Kevin Mellinger homered for the Highlanders (2-1) in the El Segundo tournament quarterfinals.
Burroughs 3, Torrance 2--Devin Grace had three hits for the Indians (1-1-1) in a consolation game of the El Segundo tournament at Torrance (1-2).
Saugus 7, Charter Oak 3--Darren Hovel drove in two runs for the Centurions (1-1) in the second round of the Upland tournament.
