SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Casey Vermette’s approach to Simi Valley High’s Marmonte League opener against Camarillo on Wednesday was simple.

Throw strikes and let his defense take care of the rest.

And with the exception of Matt Buttell’s two-run home run in the first inning, Vermette executed his plan to near perfection and Simi Valley rallied for a 4-2 victory over Camarillo at Simi Valley High.

Vermette (2-1) went the distance, giving up six hits and two walks. At one point the senior right-hander retired 12 of 13 batters.

Vermette was supported by his defense, but Camarillo pitcher Mike Corral (2-1) was a victim of sloppy play.

Camarillo (4-3, 0-1) committed two errors in the fifth inning that aided Simi Valley’s comeback.

Simi Valley (7-2, 1-0) trailed, 2-1, when third baseman Nathan Kaup booted Tim Nykoluk’s grounder. Jeff Michael followed with a sharp single to left that went through left fielder Andy Kroneberger’s legs to the fence for a two-base error.

Simi Valley took the lead with one out when a ground ball hit by Vermette that might have been a double play was bobbled by Camarillo second baseman Rodell DeSamparo. DeSamparo retired Vermette at first, but Michael scored.

Curtis Miller’s single drove in Brian Kavanagh from second for Simi Valley’s final run in the inning.

Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers sat out the contest as he finished serving a six-game suspension handed down by the Southern Section for undue influence. “I would like to think I’d never left,” said Scyphers, who watched the game from the third base foul line.
