Here’s a capsule look at some of the area baseball teams held over from last week’s high school baseball preview. League and records from the 1994 season are in parentheses.
Jefferson (Southeastern Conference; unavailable): First-year Coach David Muskrath has outstanding hitters in sophomore shortstop Adrian Penaloza, third baseman Ubaldo Montoya and catcher Sergio Juarez. Pitcher Marvin Morris has a live fastball.
Bell Gardens (Southern Section; 18-8): Catcher Jose Arana, who batted .375 last season, is the top returning player for the defending Almont League champions. Right-handed pitcher Andres Torres is the ace of the staff after recording a 4-1 record and 3.78 ERA with the junior varsity. Ben Gonzalez, who had a 3-1 record and 3.07 ERA, is the No. 2 starter. The Lancers will be a playoff contender in Division I.
Cathedral (Southern Section; 12-7): The Phantoms, who were co-champs in the Santa Fe League, are led by Manny Badillo, Danny Hernandez, Tony Soriano and Javier Gonzalez.
Salesian (Southern Section; 15-5): The Mustangs were co-champions in the Santa Fe League in 1994 but lost their two key starting pitchers. Third baseman Miguel Valez, shortstop Ralph Lomeli and first baseman Erasmo Andraete batted .350 or better last season.
