Orange’s team batting average is .418, so obviously the Panthers have plenty of outstanding hitters. But last week Matranga stood out even from that crowd. Matranga, a 5-foot-8, 160-pound leadoff hitter, batted .818, drove in eight runs and scored seven as Orange beat Canyon, 20-3, and El Modena, 13-5, in Century League games and defeated Trabuco Hills, 12-3, in a Newport Elks tournament consolation game. Matranga, who orally committed to play for Pepperdine last week, raised his batting average to .472. “He’s definitely a far superior ballplayer than most high school kids,” Orange Coach Ed Howard said.
