YORBA LINDA : Council Votes to Oppose Half-Cent Sales Tax Increase
- Share via
Calling the county’s financial crisis an opportunity to downsize a bloated bureaucracy, the City Council this week unanimously approved a resolution opposing an increase in the sales tax.
The resolution was written in response to a request from county Chief Executive Officer William J. Popejoy that council members publicly support a sales tax hike.
But the city instead lambasted the Board of Supervisors for even considering a tax increase. “I see no reason to support a countywide tax to get their feet away from the fire,” Councilwoman Barbara Kiley said.
With relatively little of the city’s money at stake and with a healthy reserve, some council members view the bankruptcy less a problem than an opportunity to reorganize and reduce the scope of the county government.
