TRACK AND FIELD : Arcadia Invitational Showcases Top Talent

A season that could be rated as one of the finest for California high school sprinters will continue today in the 28th Foot Locker Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High.

The invitational session begins at 4 p.m. for field events and 6:30 for running events. The open session starts at 11 a.m.

The girls’ sprint races are expected to be especially competitive. In the 100 meters, defending state champion Heather Sumpter of Pasadena Muir will face Andrea Anderson of Long Beach Poly. Anderson, injured at the state meet last season, is regarded as the nation’s top prep sprinter.

In the 200, Aminah Haddad of Long Beach Poly is the favorite in a talented group that includes Sumpter and freshman Angela Williams of Chino.

An anticipated showdown in the boys’ 100 between two of the nation’s top prep sprinters, Bryan Howard of Moreno Valley Canyon Springs and Deworski Odom of Philadelphia Overbrook, won’t materialize. Howard still is nursing an ankle injury he suffered last month and won’t compete.

In the boys’ 800, defending state champion Michael Granville of Bell Gardens heads a strong field that includes Obie Moore of Muir and Aaron Richberg of Union City Logan.
