PREP NOTES : Santa Ana’s Dukus Drops Coaching

Bob Dukus has stepped down as girls’ basketball coach at Santa Ana, girls’ athletic director Honor Smith said Friday. Dukus, who coached for five seasons and compiled a 51-69 record, will continue to teach science at Santa Ana. The Saints were 14-12 last season.

Tustin guard Doug Gottlieb, The Times’ all-county player of the year, will play Sunday at Detroit in Magic’s Roundball Charity Classic, a prep all-star basketball game featuring many of the country’s top seniors. ESPN2 will televise the game live at 9 a.m.

Steve Randall has been named football coach at Whittier Christian High.

He replaces Tom Caffrey, whose contract as athletic director, football and softball coach was not renewed because of budgetary reasons.

“I don’t intend to replace Tom because I don’t think you can replace a person like him,” Randall said Friday. “I’m just going to try to carry on the tradition and high standards he established here.”

Randall, the school’s varsity baseball coach, was an assistant coach for Caffrey the last 11 seasons. Caffrey’s teams were 132-60-1 in 23 seasons.

Josh Friend, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound offensive lineman from Huntington Beach, has signed a letter of intent with Division I-AA Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, his father, Clarence, said. Friend was a second-team All-Sunset League selection.
