BOXING : Boxers Advance in Golden Gloves : National Tournament Awaits After State Championships

Area boxers Oscar Lopez, Frank Carmona, Dwain Williams and Fidel Hernandez all won their final bouts April 15 at the Southern California Golden Gloves tournament open division finals.

The victories earned the quartet a shot at a May 1-6 trip to the national Golden Gloves tournament in Lowell, Mass.--provided they won their matches Saturday at the state Golden Gloves championships at Lincoln Park Recreation Center.

Lopez, competing in the 119-pound weight class, outpointed Hignacio Quezada of the Normandie/Denker boxing club to win a unanimous decision in the Southern California final.

The 19-year-old began boxing in 1993 and has a record of 11-3. Lopez, who trains at the Los Angeles Youth Athletic Club, is coached by Delfino Rodriguez.

Carmona, 19, a veteran of more than 60 bouts who fights in the 125-pound class, won a close decision over Antonio Orozco. Carmona (41-23) trains at the Resurrection boxing club under his coach, Manuel Montiel.

The sixteen-year-old Williams, competing in the 147-pound class, won a unanimous decision over stablemate Jose Arias of the Normandie/Denker Boxing Club. Williams, who began boxing in 1992, has a 30-7 record. He is coached by Andy Price.

Hernandez, 17, competing in the 156-pound class, won a unanimous decision over Adrian Carreon from the Cache Boxing Club in Vernon.

Hernandez has won three national championships in the Junior Olympic division (ages 15-16). He trains at the Los Angeles Youth Athletic Club and is coached by Jose Lopez.
