Drug Charge for Ex-Rock Star : Crime: Former drummer with Guns N’ Roses was reporedly found in his car in a heroin-overdose stupor.

The former drummer of the rock bank Guns N’ Roses was charged Wednesday with heroin possession--a felony--following an overdose last week inside his Ford Bronco in Sherman Oaks.

Steven Adler, 30, was arrested about 11 a.m. at his home in Calabasas, said Lt. Bernie Larralde of the Los Angeles Police Department’s narcotics unit. He was charged with the felony as well as two misdemeanors: being under the influence of heroin and possessing a syringe.

Larralde said Adler was cooperative with police, answering officers’ questions about the events surrounding the overdose.

“I don’t think he was expecting to be arrested,” he added.

Police and paramedics rushed to the 4500 block of Morse Avenue last Thursday night, after neighbors reported that a man had been slumped over the steering wheel of the parked Bronco for hours. The vehicle was first spotted in the neighborhood that afternoon.

The windows were rolled up, the engine was running and there were two dogs in the car, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Susan Schwartz.

According to the prosecutor, neighbors who gathered around the Bronco initially believed the man was having a heart attack. Later, police found three syringes, a spoon and heroin in the car, Schwartz said.

Adler was treated at the Medical Center of North Hollywood, where he acknowledged he was a former member of Guns N’ Roses, police said. He left the band in 1989, then sued his former band mates over his dismissal. During the trial, the band’s manager testified that Adler’s addiction led to his firing. The case was settled when the band paid Adler $2.5 million.

He was released after posting $10,000 bail and is scheduled for arraignment in Van Nuys Municipal Court on May 5. The heroin-possession charge carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison, and the misdemeanors carry yearlong County Jail sentences.
