Two former coaches from the once-prominent Long Beach State program are finalists for the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball position, according to sources in the CSUN athletic department.

A field of more than 60 applicants has been narrowed to Glenn McDonald and Michael Abraham, sources said.

McDonald, head coach at Long Beach for the past four seasons, was also a six-year 49er assistant under ex-Coach Joan Bonvicini.

He has one year left on his Long Beach contract, but was reassigned to an administrative position following the 1994-95 season.

Long Beach, which plays in the Big West Conference, finished 13-14. McDonald’s career record is 54-58. CSUN was 1-26 last season.

“I feel excited about just having the opportunity to go and interview for another head-coaching job,” McDonald said. “Whenever you get released from someplace, you hope to get a chance to coach again.”

McDonald, 42, played for Jerry Tarkanian and Lute Olson at Long Beach. He is a former No. 1 draft pick of the Boston Celtics and played on the Celtics’ 1976 NBA championship team.

Abraham, 35, was an assistant under Bonvicini at Long Beach until 1990. He has spent the last five seasons as an assistant at Oregon State, where he was recruiting coordinator.

Long Beach was 147-21 while Abraham was with the program and was ranked in the national top 10 during each of the six years he was there. The 49ers advanced to the NCAA Final Four twice in that span.
