PREP TRACK AND FIELD ROUNDUP : McGraw Gets Job Done, Laguna Hills Edges University

Laguna Hills’ Brendan McGraw knew what needed to be done to beat University in the Pacific Coast League track and field finals Friday at Irvine High.

McGraw did his part by winning his two events, the 100 and 200 meters, helping the Hawks to a league title, edging University, 143-136.

“I knew (University) would win the pole vault, discus and shot put because they have the best guys in the county,” McGraw said. “So we knew we had to make up for it in some of the races. I knew I had to do well and our hurdlers had to help make up for it.”

McGraw took the league title in the 100 in 11.33 seconds and the 200 in 22.74, making up for his disappointing league finals last year.

“Last year I didn’t run well at all and finished third in both events,” McGraw said. “I felt really good today. This was the first time I beat (Aliso Niguel’s Brian) Macrae.”

Macrae finished the 100 in 11.41.

University’s Sepehr Sharifi continued to dominate league competition, winning the discus and shot put. Sharifi, who has the county’s best mark in the discus this season at 185-10, won the event at 181-10, 61 feet better than University’s Dave Fontanella.

Tiffany Boykin posted a personal best 59.17 in the 400, won the 800 in 2:24.42 and won the 200 in 27.23, helping Laguna Hills to the girls’ title.

The Hawks finished with 175 points, 70 points ahead of second-place University.
