COLLEGE ROUNDUP : SCC Clinches NAIA Far West Men’s Tennis Title

Southern California College clinched the NAIA Far West Regional men’s tennis championship and a trip to the national tournament when David Robbins advanced to the singles final and Robbins and Mattias Johansson advanced to the doubles final Friday at Costa Mesa Tennis Club.

The Vanguards with 14 points cannot be passed by second-place Point Loma Nazarene (12) or third-place Westmont (10).

Fourth-seeded Robbins, a redshirt freshman from Sunny Hills, beat second-seeded Ashley Fickel of Westmont, 6-4, 7-5, in the semifinals and will play top-seeded Mathias Sundberg of Point Loma Nazarene in the final at 9 a.m. today. Robbins and Johansson beat Mike Moenter and Darren Auld of Cal Baptist, 6-1, 6-3, and will play Jason Berns and Jeff Villano of Westmont in the doubles final at 3:30 p.m.

SCC and the singles and doubles champions will advance to the national tournament May 22-27 in Tulsa.

In the NCAA Division I Region 8 men’s tennis tournament:

UC Irvine 4, Washington 3--UC Irvine’s Fred Bach defeated Washington’s Richard Rosen, 6-3, 6-1, in the Anteaters’ first-round victory. The Anteaters (13-10) will play California today at 2 p.m. in the regional semifinals.

In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 2-4, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 0-2 (second game, 10 innings)--Senetha Williams hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to lead third-ranked Cal State Fullerton (39-14) in the second game.
