SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

For the time being, Greg Voigt of Goleta can claim to have the fastest street stock car at Ventura Raceway.

Voigt made it look easy Friday night with a 10-length victory over last week’s winner, Charles Utts of Camarillo, in the 20-lap main event.

It was the second victory for Voigt, who dropped out of last week’s crash-fest with a flat tire, after his car suffered extensive frame and suspension damage in an early collision.

“I spent a lot of time making (the car) work good,” Voigt said.

Voigt took a victory in the seven-lap heat race and found the path to his feature victory while doing so.

“I noticed in the heat that the track was working good in the (high groove), so I ran there in the main and stayed out of the ruts,” Voigt said.

Utts, who is still looking for the proper front end setup on his converted asphalt racer, worked his way up through the field after starting from the back of the pack, following a third-lap caution period when defending champion Paul Moore lost a wheel.

By the 15th lap, Voigt had almost a half-lap lead over Utts when the caution light came on due to debris on the track.

Utts received a reprieve from the yellow light, as he had spun between the first and second turn as the light came on, but the rules provide for a return to the running order on the last completed lap whenever the caution comes out.

Ernie Malone of Casitas Springs took his second 15-lap mini stock feature, edging Camarillo’s Rodney McKinney at the finish.

The pair dueled for the lead over the final six laps, with Malone taking the inside lane to make the pass for victory on the final turn.

The third time was the charm for the start of the 15-lap pony stock main event, which was won by Jim Jewett Jr of Ventura.

It was Jewett’s second victory, and the second time that Jewett’s sister, Tracy, of Oxnard, finished second to her brother.

On the first two attempts to start the race, multi-car collisions occurred between the first and second turn during the opening lap.

Jim Jewett was involved in a five-car tangle in the second incident, and started the race from the back of the pack.

By the seventh lap, Jim Jewett was in a three-way tie for fourth with Mira Cook of Camarillo and Trish Remley of Oxnard, and he took the lead on the 13th lap, almost sliding off the track on the inside of a corner to pass Rick Davis of Santa Paula and Tracy Jewett, who was running second.
