Cal State Offers Basketball Contest

Girls and boys in grades three through eight are invited to participate in a three-on-three basketball tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.

Proceeds from the event will support the university’s women’s basketball team, which needs to raise $16,000 by July 1 to survive, Coach Debbie Ayers said.

The tournament entry fee is $30 for each three-person team. Winners will receive prizes.

The players and their coaches also will conduct a basketball camp for fifth-graders July 23-30. The cost is $375 for those who stay at dormitories on campus and $175 for those who go home each night.

3 Students Win Cash for Law Week Essays

Irvine High School sophomore Christina Meyer won the top prize in the recent Law Week Essay Contest, sponsored by Western State University College of Law in Irvine. For her winning essay, “The Law: A Thirty-Second Critique,” she was awarded $100.

Irvine High junior Loren Charles Goldman won second place and $75, and University High School junior Michael Silberfarb won third place and $50.

Essay contest entries were required to address the topic, “What the Law Means to Me.”

AYSO Takes Sign-Ups for the Fall Season

Registration for the fall season of the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region 97, is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Children in east Costa Mesa and west Newport Beach who will be between the ages of 4 1/2 and 18 years on Aug. 1 are eligible to sign up. First-time participants must bring a birth certificate to verify their ages.

Fees are $55 for the first player in a family and $50 for each additional player in the same family.

17 Seniors Are Merit Scholarship Finalists

Seventeen high school seniors in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District have been named National Merit Scholarship finalists.

The students are Ankur Desai, Arash Khalessi, Andrew Flashberg, Kandrap Patel and Kari Sciotto of El Toro High School; Gene P. Bastnagel, Colton J. King, James A. Leavitt, Vijay M. Goel, Allan M. Kremp, John A. Leavitt and Jalaja V. Puthuvalil of Laguna Hills High School; Damon Larson and Matthew Wolf of Mission Viejo High School, and Mike Junge, Jenny Lindermann and Sonja Wyche of Trabuco Hills High School.
