PREP TENNIS / SOUTHERN SECTION PAIRINGS : Woodbridge Seeded Fourth in Division I

Share

Woodbridge is the only Orange County tennis team seeded in the Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Santa Barbara, Beverly Hills and Palos Verdes Peninsula are the top three seeded teams. Woodbridge is fourth.

Woodbridge (19-1), the Sea View League champion, opens first-round play Tuesday against Lakewood (11-8), an at-large team from the Moore League. Woodbridge could be without one of its top singles players, Chase Exon, who has been sidelined since suffering an eye injury in practice three weeks ago.

Woodbridge could face Dana Hills (16-1-1), Orange County’s third-ranked team, in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Dana Hills lost to Woodbridge, 10-8.The winner would have to face top-seeded and defending champion Santa Barbara (19-0) in the semifinals.

Mission Viejo, which finished second to Dana Hills in the South Coast League, will play host to Santa Margarita in the first round and will likely face a tough Diamond Bar team in the second round. Corona del Mar, the second-place team from the Sea View League, appears to have an easier draw facing Trabuco Hills in the first round then likely Long Beach Poly in the second round.

“I thought the Southern Section rankings were wrong,” Mission Viejo Coach Bill Smith said. “I thought we should have been seventh. When Corona del Mar lost (Tyler) Stonebreaker, the complexion of their team changed.”

In Division II, two-time defending champion Sunny Hills (16-2) is the top-seeded team. The Lancers open with Claremont or Canyon in the first round Tuesday and could play second-seeded Palm Desert in the finals again.

But Palm Desert (20-0) will probably have to get past third-seeded Foothill (18-1) in the semifinals. Foothill, led by singles players Joost Hol and Ryan Thompson, open with Sonora or Cypress on Tuesday.

There are no seeded teams in Division III or Division IV.

Wild-card matches begin Friday. The four division final matches are scheduled for May 31 at alternate sites. All matches begin at 3:15 p.m.
