Although it took Cindy Ball’s two-run double in the sixth inning to give the Camarillo High softball team a 2-1 victory over Westlake and the Marmonte League championship Tuesday, the Scorpions actually might have won the game the day before.

To prepare his team to face Westlake left-hander Kelly DeArman, Camarillo Coach Darwin Tolzin brought out Christi Moore, a southpaw who graduated from Camarillo in 1992, to pitch batting practice Monday.

“It was a God-send for us,” Tolzin said. “It gave us a chance to look at a left-hander who throws just like DeArman.”

DeArman (20-4) gave the Scorpions a steady diet of outside pitches, most of which they popped into the gusting wind for easy outs. But with Jefflyn Spahr at third and Julie Borchard at second with two out in the sixth, the right-handed hitting Ball took a 3-and-2 pitch and drilled it just inside the first-base line for a double.

“DeArman’s tough,” Tolzin said. “She works on keeping the ball on the black. We worked all day on hitting it the other way.”

Ball retired the side in order in the seventh and Camarillo (21-4-1, 12-1) celebrated the championship.

Westlake (21-5, 10-3) will make the playoffs for the first time.

Westlake, which had one hit through the first five innings, took a 1-0 lead in the sixth.

With one out, Michelle Notaro walked, stole second and took third on a groundout. Ball (8-2) threw a riseball that didn’t rise to Cathy Davie, the Warriors’ Michigan-bound center fielder and No. 3 hitter.

Davie drove the ball into the gap in left-center. Spahr, the center fielder, chased down the ball and made a strong throw to third, where Davie was nailed trying for a triple.

Spahr led off the bottom of the inning with her second single of the game. and Jessica Ziese sacrificed her to second. Borchard walked and Kortney Edge moved the runners into scoring position with a grounder to second base.

“(Ball) was one for three and she got the one when she needed it,” Westlake Coach Doug Gove said. “You’ve got to give her credit. She got it done when she had to.”

Ball pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking two. DeArman gave up four hits and struck out three.
