HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Buena’s Dumais Dives to Record

Sophomore Justin Dumais of Buena High set a Southern Section Division I boys’ diving record with a 649.70-point total to win the division title at Heritage Park in Irvine on Wednesday.

Dumais’ younger brother, Troy (611.20), was the only diver within 167 points of Justin.

Charles Law of Newbury Park finished fourth with 396.85 points.

In the girls’ final, junior Tracy Thall of Westlake was the highest area finisher, placing 12th with 410.05 points.

SOFTBALL

Verdugo Hills 25, L.A. CES 1--Melanie Wood struck out nine in four innings and had three hits and drove in five runs as the Dons (13-3) trounced L.A. CES (7-4) in a first-round City Section 3-A Division playoff game at Verdugo Hills.

Wood was relieved in the fifth by Shannon Schoonover, who struck out eight and walked one.

Alemany 1, Louisville 0 (9 inn.)--Esmeralda Macias singled home Tiffany Curcio with one out in the ninth to give the Indians their 18th consecutive Mission League victory in a game at the Sylmar Independent Baseball League fields.

Sophie Contreraz (22-1) allowed four hits and struck out two for Alemany (24-1, 9-0 in league play).

Chaminade 2, Notre Dame 1--Sheila Shilati’s two-out single in the top of the 13th drove in Kelly Durkin with the winning run for Chaminade (13-8, 6-3) in the Mission League game at Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park and gave the Eagles their first berth in the Southern Section playoffs in five years.

Harvard-Westlake 5, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Corey Roberts (6-9) threw a perfect game for the Wolverines (9-9, 2-7) and struck out eight in the Mission League game at Valley College.

Montclair Prep 11, L.A. Lutheran 0--Brandi Cohen threw a one-hitter, struck out six and walked two for the Mounties in the nonleague game at Franklin Field.

Jody Gelfand was two for three with four runs batted in and scored twice for Montclair Prep (19-3).

Cornerstone Christian 18, Cate 0--Julie Siefert was four for four with four RBIs and scored three runs for the Eagles (17-0-1, 6-0) in the Condor League game at Freedom Park that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Karen Breshears (8-0) did not allow a hit, struck out eight and walked seven as Cornerstone Christian clinched the league title.

BASEBALL

Alemany 11, Notre Dame 4--The Indians trailed, 4-2, after four innings, but Rex Supa’s grand slam in the fifth gave them a lead they didn’t relinquish in the Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Danny Arguello (5-3) scattered 10 hits for Alemany (15-9, 10-1).

Camarillo 11, Channel Islands 1--Rodell Desamtaro had two hits, three RBIs and scored twice for the Scorpions (16-8, 8-5) in the Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Mike Muller added a three-run home run in the fifth for Camarillo.

Newbury Park 3, Agoura 2--Mike Amundson’s one-out sacrifice fly scored Mike Campos in the ninth to give the Panthers (8-16, 4-9) the victory in the Marmonte League game at Borchard Park.

Amundson (4-6) also was the winning pitcher

Loyola 7, Crespi 4--Barry Matthews had three hits, scored once and drove in a run for Crespi (10-15, 6-5) in a Mission League loss at Loyola (9-7-1, 6-4-1).

Campbell Hall 11, Valley Torah 0--John Pollak did not allow a hit, struck out six and walked two for the Vikings in the nonleague game at Campbell Hall (11-8) that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Montclair Prep d. Imperial, 12-15, 15-8, 15-7, 15-8--Carlos Roubicek had 20 kills and Brian Reder added 10 for the winners in the wild-card match of the Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Josh Holtzman added 30 assists for Montclair Prep (9-6), which plays at Village Christian in a first-round match Friday.
