SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Chaffey’s 3-Run Inning Enough to Beat Moorpark

Rachel Lopez singled to score Teka Clayton in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Chaffey College defeat Moorpark, 4-3, Friday in the first round of the Southern California regional playoffs at Chaffey.

Trailing, 3-0, the Panthers (29-10) tied the game with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by Kari Abbott’s run-scoring triple.

The Raiders (19-14) scored two in the first inning on Dana Skinner’s run-scoring triple.

Andy Dominguez added a run in the third with a solo home run.

Moorpark will play Pierce, which was defeated by Palomar, 10-1, today in the second round.

Mt. San Antonio 1, Antelope Valley 0--Cindy Sims hit a fourth-inning double but was left there when the next two batters popped out in a regional playoff game at Rancho Santiago.

Sims represented the tying run for the Marauders (32-13).

The Mounties’ run came in the first inning on an error and a wild pitch.

Jody Snelling gave up four hits and struck out seven for Antelope Valley, which will play Pasadena City today.

HIGH SCHOOL

Verdugo Hills 12, Roosevelt 1--Shannon Schoonover had two hits, including a double, and starter Melanie Wood struck out seven in six innings as the top-seeded Dons downed ninth-seeded Roosevelt in a City Section 3-A Division quarterfinal playoff game at Verdugo Hills.

Wood (12-2) and Schoonover allowed nine hits, but the Roughriders could only manage a run in the second while the Dons (14-3) broke out with four in the fourth.

Verdugo Hills catcher Jodi Kent, playing with a torn ligament and fractured thumb on her catching hand, threw out two runners trying to steal and picked another off first base.

Buena 3, San Marcos 2--Shortstop Robyn Reida had three hits, including a home run, for the Channel League champion Bulldogs (22-3-1, 14-0) in a game at San Marcos.

Nicole Greathouse (16-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out two and walking two. The Royals (19-4-1, 12-2) could have earned a share of the title with a victory.

Hart 2, Canyon 0--Mary Colleran pitched a four-hitter and struck out 12 Cowboys as the Indians (20-8, 8-4) finished in second place in the Foothill League with a victory at home over Canyon (14-12, 7-5).

Burroughs 9, Burbank 0--Gabi Morris threw her first no-hitter of the season to lead the Indians to a Foothill League victory at Burbank. Shaland Moreno and Holly Squire each had three hits and two RBIs for the Indians (9-14, 3-9).

Morris (8-10) had a perfect game with one out in the seventh before Kim Latina reached base on an error.

Alemany 9, Notre Dame 3--Notre Dame (12-13, 5-5) led, 3-2, in the third but Alba Cano’s two run double put Alemany (25-1, 10-0) ahead for good.

Tiffany Curcio was three for three and scored twice for Alemany.

Harvard-Westlake 2, Chaminade 0--Corey Roberts threw a three-hitter, struck out four and walked four for the Wolverines in the Mission League game at Chaminade.

Kelly Durkin (6-9) pitched a three-hitter, struck out eight and walked one for the Eagles (13-9, 6-4), but a dropped fly ball by the Eagles’ right fielder with two out in the first allowed two unearned runs to score.

Village Christian 4, Maranatha 2--Jackie Aranda struck out seven, walked two and allowed only two hits to lead the Crusaders (15-6, 9-3) into first place in an Alpha League game at Maranatha.

Santa Clara 2, Calabasas 1--Christi Culver, starting in place of sick teammate Melissa Krolik, pitched her first complete game but the Coyotes (14-5, 11-4) lost a Frontier League game to the Saints (10-9, 9-6) at Santa Clara.

Moorpark 4, Santa Paula 2-- Mindy Penrod (10-4) turned away a two-run rally by Santa Paula in the seventh inning of a Frontier League game at Santa Paula. Penrod had a perfect game going into the fourth.

Elizabeth Christensen had a two-run double for Moorpark (17-6, 13-2) in the first.

Rio Mesa 8, Santa Barbara 2--Rio Mesa (10-16, 8-6) had out 12 hits and took advantage of four Santa Barbara errors for a Channel League victory at Rio Mesa.
