Chapman Scores Two in 8th to Win Softball Regional
Jessamine Maiben’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth gave Chapman a 2-1 victory over Buena Vista in the final of the NCAA Division III West softball regional in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Buena Vista, the host team, needed to win twice to advance. It scored in the top of the eighth inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Chapman’s rally started with one out. Lisa Simpson walked and Jenny Martinez singled to left. Christy Guidorizzi sacrificed before Maiben’s game-winning hit.
Guidorizzi (24-4) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings for her third victory in the regional. Buena Vista scored on Megan Coe’s home run. She had struck out in four of five previous at-bats against Guidorizzi.
Chapman advanced to the Division III championship series starting Thursday in Storm Lake. Chapman’s first game will be Friday against the winner of the tournament opener between Rowan (N.J.) or Allegheny (Pa.).
