SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After spending nine years as baseball coach at Newbury Park High, Gary Fabricius has called it quits so he can devote more time to coaching football.

Fabricius, who is the offensive coordinator for the Newbury Park football team, finished with a career record of 118-106-5.

“I’ve spent the last couple of years thinking about how I would like to free up the spring season,” Fabricius said. “I wanted to be with the football team. By thinking that, I wasn’t doing justice to the kids on the baseball team.”

Newbury Park finished 9-16, 5-9 in the league this season. Fabricius’ era ended on a winning note when the Panthers last week defeated second-place Royal in their season finale, 16-15.

Newbury Park won the Marmonte League title last season and finished second in 1989 and ’93.

It was while Fabricius was applying for a the vacant football position at Thousand Oaks High that he came to grips with his love for the sport.

“When I started getting my resume ready and was figuring out how I would run things if it was my program is when I really realized how much I missed football,” he said.

Fabricius’ teams compiled a 61-56-1 record in league play while at Newbury Park and had a 2-3 record in the Southern Section playoffs.
