Two freshmen and two seniors advanced from Saturday’s Southern Section individual singles sectionals at Edison into next week’s round of 16 at SeaCliff Racquet Club.

Freshmen Joost Hol of Foothill and Ryan Moore of Servite, seeded third and fourth, won their two matches in straight sets as did top-seeded Elliott West of Laguna Beach and second-seeded Ryan Thompson of Foothill.

Hol, who won the boys’ 16s at Ojai last month, was nonchalant about his day, which ended with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jonny Biorkman of Woodbridge.

“I don’t know if I expected to be this far or not,” he said. “I never really thought of it. I didn’t even know that CIF was [Saturday] until Wednesday.”

Hol jumped on Biorkman early, breaking his service, and he never let up. Biorkman, who defeated Long Beach Wilson’s Derek Munchow in two sets, was no match for Hol’s powerful ground strokes.

Moore defeated archrival Su Dang of Long Beach Jordan, 7-5, 6-1, but got an early scare. He fell behind, 4-1, as Dang crushed ground stroke after ground stroke for winners.

“I know he’s usually a pretty good front-runner, so I was a little concerned,” Moore said.

But Moore settled down and Dang began missing shots. And within an hour, the match was over.

“I started to hit the ball harder and I got a little more aggressive,” Moore said.

West, who will play at UC Davis next year, lost only six games all day in beating Jason Hipp of Fountain Valley and Bryan Hollenbeck of Loara. Still, West wasn’t pleased.

“It’s frustrating,” he said. “I’m still in that slump. Every player goes through these stretches.”

If West can come out of his slump by Friday’s round of 16, he said he can win the tournament.

“The top 20 guys are really close,” he said. “If I’m playing well, I know I’ll do well next week.”

Thompson advanced to the round of 16 for the second straight year with victories over Ryan Michas of Edison and Chris Seid of University.
