The San Pedro softball team has advanced to the City Section 4-A final the past four years, but it has yet to master the victory celebration of dumping water on the coach.

San Pedro defeated Granada Hills, 3-0, Tuesday at UCLA’s Sunset Field to win its third title in four years and sixth overall. Then the Pirates opened a gash above Coach Tony Dobra’s left eye as several players attempted to douse him.

Showing little mercy, the players tried again, this time with shaving cream.

“I should remember to bring a change of clothes to these things,” Dobra said, wiping blood from the cut above his eye and digging shaving cream from his ear. “But that would be presumptuous.”

Darlene Caracoza scored for the Pirates in the third inning after reaching base on an error by first baseman Tiffany Snyder, who bobbled a short throw from pitcher Jessica Creith. She advanced to third on two ground outs and scored after Michelle Spanjol singled to left.

San Pedro (21-5) added two runs in the fifth inning, when Caracoza and Liza Prieto scored on two errors and a stolen base.

The Highlanders (15-6) threatened in the fourth, when Creith advanced to third on a single, a ground out and a stolen base, but Kimberly Rowerdink popped to Caracoza at shortstop to end the inning.

In the 3-A final, Alma Limon threw a no-hitter to lead Garfield to a 2-0 victory over Verdugo Hills in Garfield’s first appearance in a City final. Limon (16-0) walked the only batter who reached base.

The Vikings (18-3) scored after Marina Medina tripled to right to lead off the sixth inning and Vanessa Cardona singled to drive her home. Cardona advanced to second on an error, advanced to third on a groundout to second and scored on a single by Liz Mendez.

Verdugo Hills (15-4) had outscored its previous three playoff opponents, 38-2, and was appearing in its third-consecutive final.
