Mosley Leads Local Boxers to Next Level

Larry Mosley led a successful contingent of Los Angeles teen-agers in winning gold medals at the Region 14 Junior Olympic boxing championships over Memorial Day weekend in Brawley, Calif., qualifying for the Junior Olympic National Championships later this month.

Mosley, who competed in the 119-pound division, was named the outstanding boxer of the tournament.

Joining Mosley as senior division winners were Salvador Garcia (100 pounds), Adan Reyes (125), Jose Garcia (147) and Ramiro Hernandez (165).

Salvador Garcia, 15, outpointed Luis Santoyo of San Diego on Saturday and clinched his second regional championship by decisioning Cesar Moncada of Nevada on Sunday.

Mosley, 15, stopped Jonathan Fain of Nevada in the third round in Saturday’s bout and decisioned Jorge Martinez of San Diego on Sunday.

Reyes, 16, outclassed a less-experienced Pedro Gomez from San Diego in his championship bout on Sunday.

Jose Garcia, 15, and Ramiro Hernandez, 15, were uncontested in their weight classes.

Also winning gold medals in the Intermediate Junior Olympic division (ages 13 and 14), but not advancing to the National Championships, were Rudy Rodriguez, 13, (80 pounds); Daniel Velez, 14, (85); and Jose Navarro, 13, (75).

Garcia, Mosley, Reyes, Garcia and Hernandez will travel to Marquette, Mich., to participate in the national championships. The tournament starts June 20 at the Olympic Education Center on the campus of Northern Michigan University. The finals will be held on Saturday, June 24.

Former Dorsey High standout James Bacon will make his debut with the Harlem Globetrotters during the team’s South American tour, which begins this month.

Bacon, a 6-foot-9 center, averaged 5.2 points while playing all 33 games for Arizona State this past season. He graduated from ASU in May with a bachelor’s degree in social work.

After Dorsey, Bacon played college ball at Long Beach City before attending ASU.

“I am excited to be joining a team which is so rich in basketball tradition,” Bacon said. “I look forward to learning the Globetrotters’ system. I believe this experience will allow me to learn as well as teach others, especially kids.”

Globetrotters teams have performed for more than 100 million people in 113 countries.
