Three months after taking the Newbury Park High girls’ basketball team to new heights, most of the principal characters will take a final curtain call.

The Pioneers’ starting lineup, minus injured center Kara McKeown, will play for the South in the Ventura County Coaches Assn. All-Star game tonight at Ventura High.

The girls’ game begins at 6:30 followed by the boys’ at approximately 8.

Guards Julie Wastell and Rene Intlekofer and forwards Christine Arguijo and Jann Thorpe all started for the Panthers, who won the Southern Section Division III-AA championship and reached the State final.

“It’s going to be a little strange at first, playing a real game,” Wastell said. “But we’ve played together for so long, especially this season, it will come back quickly.”

Although Dave Murphy (Simi Valley) is the official coach based on a rotation among Ventura County schools, he enlisted Newbury Park’s Nori Parvin to join him and her players on the team.

“I’m going to let her coach,” Murphy said.

“I’ll just stand back and get out of the way.”

The Panther foursome will be joined by Shane Anderson of La Reina, an All-Ventura County selection by The Times, and twins Alisha and Alexa Valvanis of Oak Park.

Three Buena players, including Kara Newman, an All-Ventura pick by The Times, lead the North, coached by Rio Mesa’s Al Walker.

Two other All-Ventura selections, Ember Brown of Ventura and Brianna Kanongata’a of Rio Mesa, will play for the North.

In the boys’ game, the North, coached by Ventura’s Dan Larson, has a distinct Frontier League flavor.

Three players each from Frontier co-champions Santa Clara and Santa Paula form the nucleus for the North.

Point guard Manuel Escamilla, shooting guard Ben Tryk and 6-foot-8 center Danny Herrera all started for the Cardinals, who ended Santa Clara’s 91-game league winning streak and advanced to the Southern Section III-A quarterfinals.

Forwards Kevin Collins, Matt Hanson and Mike McGill will represent Santa Clara. Escamilla, Tryk and Collins were named to The Times’ Ventura County team.

Other players include Oxnard forward Steve Vaca, Hueneme forward Aaron Cropper, Buena forward Trevor Jackson and St. Bonaventure guard JoJo Molina.

Agoura Coach Kevin Pasky will coach two of his own--Ben Richardson, a 6-6 center who was an All-Valley pick by The Times and will play at Boise State, and Maurice Moore.

Guards Shawn Williams and Brandon Creason of Oak Park, center Eric Carlsen and forward Donnie Wright of Royal, and forwards Matt Smiley and Nasir Shakouri of Westlake also will play for the South.
