Orange County track and field fans witnessed the rapid rise of Dana Hills’ Bryan Harrison this spring.
In a little more than a year, Harrison, a sophomore and The Times Orange County boys’ track athlete of the year, has evolved from being a league runner-up to a State champion.
Harrison also became the first State sprint champion from Orange County since Clancy Edwards of Santa Ana won the 200 in 1973. Harrison’s wind-aided time of 20.82 was the fastest in county history under any conditions.
The following events are a chronology of his sensational season:
- Two victories at the Irvine Invitational in the 100- (10.92 seconds) and 200-meter (22.01) races.
“I’m pleased with the way it went today,” Harrison said afterward.
- The realization that he could run with the area’s best sprinters after placing third in the 100 (10.70) and second in the seeded 200 (21.64) at the Arcadia Invitational.
“I didn’t know how good he was until that Arcadia meet,” Dana Hills Coach Carey Hubert said. “He stayed with the best in the nation.”
- The lowering of his personal bests at the Mt. San Antonio Relays, where he finished second in the 100 (10.64) and 200 (21.30).
- Two victories at the Orange County Championships--in the 100 (10.59) and 200 (21.45), although both of his times were wind-aided. Harrison was named the meet’s outstanding sprinter.
- A county-record tying time of 10.56 in the 100 at the South Coast League preliminaries, where he also ran the 200 in a hand-timed 21.2. He eased up at the league finals, cruising to two victories.
- At the section Division II preliminaries, he defeated last year’s top 200 runner, Bryan Howard of Moreno Valley Canyon Springs, in the 100, racing against the wind to finish in 10.63. He later won his qualifying 200 heat in 22.07.
“I think at least he [Howard] knows who I am now,” Harrison, said, laughing after the race.
- Two personal bests at the Division II finals the next weekend at Cerritos College, where he ran a wind-aided 10.42 for second place in the 100 and a wind-legal 21.10 in the 200 for his first section title.
- A breeze through the Masters Meet, where Harrison finished second to Howard in the 100 (10.72) and second to Muir’s Obea Moore in the 200 (21.14).
- At the State meet’s qualifying round, Harrison finished second to West Bakersfield’s Marques Holiwell in his 100 and 200 heats, posting wind-aided 10.48 and legal 21.18 times.
- Holiwell became the State 100 champion, and Harrison finished third (10.51), but it was in the 200 he made his most memorable mark.
