South Gate’s Silva Named Player of Year : All-stars: He helped lead Rams to victory over Narbonne in finals. Of the 22 players picked for 3-A first team, 13 are from the Central City.

South Gate High’s Andy Silva was selected the City Section 3-A Division Player of the Year as the Amateur Athletic Foundation announced its high school baseball all-star teams last week.

Of the 22 players selected to the All-City 3-A team, 13 were from the Central City area.

Franklin first baseman Oscar Cabrera was selected to the first team for the third consecutive season, while Lincoln shortstop Cesar Castaneda made the team for the second time. Castaneda was the 1994 co-player of the year.

Silva made a sensational over-the-shoulder catch in center field and was the winning pitcher during the Rams’ 9-3 win over Narbonne in the City Section 3-A finals. He had a 4-2 pitching record and batted .432.

“I’m honored to be named player of the year because there are a lot of good players out there,” Silva said. I’m excited to be recognized as one of them.”

Other local players selected to the first team were John Moreno-Orozco and Temo Lopez of Bell, Byron Valencia (Garfield), Jeff Deno (Franklin), Jorge Camacho (Fremont), Jorge Erami (Lincoln), Jesus Rosales (Manual Arts), Steve Toriz (South Gate), and David Goss (Washington).

Garfield’s Alma Limon was named the 1995 City Section 3-A girls’ softball Player of the Year.

The senior pitcher posted a 18-3 record. In the City Section 3-A finals, she threw a no-hitter to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over Verdugo Hills.

“She’s something very special,” Garfield Coach John Benson said. “I’ve never seen anyone work harder.”

Two of Limon’s teammates, Jennifer Inzunza and Maria Medina, also were selected to the first team.
