Philip Mathews, the Ventura College men’s basketball coach, is one of two finalists for the vacant position at the University of San Francisco.

Mathews, 44, and Robert McCullum, an assistant at Florida, are the two men still in line for the job. Mathews was being interviewed Wednesday in San Francisco by Bill Hogan, USF athletic director, and could not be reached for comment.

Hogan is expected to announce his choice Friday.

Mathews guided the Pirates to a 37-1 record and the state championship last season, their second since he took over the program in 1985-86. He is 298-56 in 10 seasons at Ventura.

McCullum was a finalist at Washington State and New Orleans last year.

The USF job became vacant when Jim Brovelli resigned after last season because of health reasons. The Dons went 10-18 .
