Joe Stern, a varsity assistant and head junior varsity coach in the La Quinta boys’ basketball program last season, has been hired as the girls’ varsity coach, Athletic Director Jim Perry announced.

Stern replaced Tony Tubbs, who resigned for personal reasons. La Quinta was 0-23 last season.

Lyn Lumley, Southern California Christian’s football coach, has resigned before his first game to take an assistant position at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., Athletic Director Jim Allen said.

Lumley was hired this summer to replace Bert Esposito, who left SCC with a 27-18 record to take the varsity coaching job at Temecula Linfield, a rival in the Arrowhead League.

Allen, who replaced Esposito as SCC’s athletic director, said Thursday afternoon he hopes to have the position filled “within the next 72 hours.”

Steve Conti has been hired as a walk-on coach for the Corona del Mar boys’ volleyball team, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick announced.

Conti, a former All-Sea View League player at Estancia, replaces Joey Fuschetti, who resigned June 16 after compiling a 56-42 record in four seasons.

Conti won three Century League championships the past two years as boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach at Foothill High.

Jeff McGraw of Fullerton shot a one-under-par 71 to stand at 144 after two rounds of the American Junior Golf Assn. Southwestern Junior Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.

McGraw shares the lead with Greg Pittenger of Coto de Caza, who shot a 72 Wednesday, and Russell Surber of Flintridge.

Jin Park, also of Fullerton, is at 148 after shooting 75 on the University of New Mexico’s Championship golf course.

In the girls’ tournament, Ramie Takahashi of Irvine shot a 82 and has a 161 total after two rounds. The leader is Jennifer Gomez, Las Cruces, N.M., at 153.
