Clarice Blackburn; Actress, Emmy-Winning Writer

Clarice Blackburn, 74, a Broadway actress who won two Emmy Awards for writing television soap operas. Born in San Francisco, Ms. Blackburn earned a bachelor’s degree in speech and drama from Texas State College for Women. She made her acting debut in 1947 in the play “The Circle of Chalk” on Martha’s Vineyard. Her Broadway credits in the 1950s and 1960s included “The Grass Harp,” “American Gothic,” “Desk Set,” “Juno,” “The Miracle Worker,” “The Queen and the Rebels” and “Good Day.” In 1960, she appeared as the sickly wife in a television production of “Ethan Frome.” She became a regular on a number of soap operas, including “As the World Turns” and “Dark Shadows,” and shared Emmys in 1985 and 1988 as a member of the writing team for “All My Children.” Ms. Blackburn also acted in two feature films, “The Violators” in 1959 and “Pretty Poison” in 1968. On Aug. 5 in New York City of cancer.
