After winning more games than it had the previous five years, the program appears to be moving in the right direction under Haley. “We’re so far ahead of last year, it’s scary,” Haley said. The quarterback position figures to be improved with Tran, last year’s freshman quarterback, as the starter. “He throws well and he has surprising leadership ability for a sophomore,” Haley said. Villa, who was beaten out for the starting quarterback spot, will be a slot back. Carlos Carbajal, a quick darting back, and Perez, an outside threat, will split the tailback duties. Romero, a basketball player, starts at tight end. “We’re going to try to develop more of a passing game,” Haley said. “We’d like to be more balanced.”
